Idioms are groups of words with a special meaning that is often quite different from the meaning of the individual words. Different idioms come from every corner of the English speaking world. Some idioms translate well from a users’ home language. Some idioms don’t.
In essence, idioms help give access to the English language. They show understanding when used and they show empathy when understood. They provoke thought about the way a user needs to use their English as well as access to the wider world that English offers. Think about the vast range of English language films that would be better understood through broad knowledge of idioms. Share the idioms of your homeland to create discussion or consider daily use and context.
