Life in Bangkok has gradually been returning to normal, well the new normal, over the past months, but many rules and regulations are still in place.
Covid 19 has really affected all of us in many different ways. We started with the total lockdown and curfews in April through to the present day restrictions.
As a country, the biggest impact has been the closure of international flights and the almost total ban on foreigners and tourist from coming to Thailand. The flow on effect has been severe with hotels and all tourist linked businesses really suffering. Gradually, over the coming months, we hope that more restrictions will be relaxed and tourists will start returning.
But how does the new normal affect my day to day life?
The biggest impact is that getting around without wearing a face mask is almost impossible. You can’t use any of public transport systems without wearing one, same when entering shopping malls, 7/11 stores and restaurants in fact pretty much everywhere. The regulation is still being strictly applied. Your temperature will be checked constantly and if you record 37.5º C or above you will be refused entry. The checks are very quick and painless, but now a part of everyday life.
Most people have been able to return to their work sites and schools have all reopened, but all the regulations mentioned apply. As a teacher you needed to have your temperature checked when entering your work site, wear a mask or shield at all times and maintain social distancing as the norm in your classroom. Fortunately or unfortunately, this becomes second nature after awhile.
You are now free to travel within Thailand whether by bus, train or plane, so taking short break holidays is not only possible, but actively encouraged by the government.
For me, it has been surprising how quickly the new normal has become the normal and putting on a face mask when you leave home has become the same as putting on your shoes. Thailand has worked hard at trying to prevent a 2nd wave from spreading, so far successfully. Some of the restrictions and regulations can be a pain, but only a small inconvenience compared to what a massive second wave would cause.
I go with the flow, relax and enjoy my life despite the problems we all face.
